Canadiens at Senators NHL Week 12

I mean, yikes. They got the win, but the Montréal Canadiens did everything they could to lose that game against the Rangers. They blew a 3-goal lead in the opening period to narrowly skate to a 5 - 4 victory. Beggars definitely can't be choosers right now, as it was only their third win of the season. But, they did manage to score 5 goals. That was their second 5-goal game in their most recent homestand, the first one coming against the Panthers, another game they won, obviously. But they were also shut out by the Kings between those two games.

    My Team's Next MatchMontreal Canadiens

Prediction: The Ottawa Senators at Sports Interaction

I still firmly believe the Montréal Canadiens are going to make the playoffs. But they are not going to get it all back at once. They're not going to go on an 8 or 10 game winning streak to suddenly surge back up the Eastern Conference standings. They are going to have to grind it out. Starting with this road trip. I don't, however, have them winning tonight. They're even worse on the road. Despite the fact that Ottawa has been not-so-good at home this year, I have the Senators winning tonight.

What can I say about the Senators this year? They've been disappointing, very early on. Especially when you consider that they have already lost 5 games in a shootout or overtime through only 11 games the season. And four of them have been at home. It's still very early, and they have lots of time to right the ship. But that's a bothersome trend of not being able to finish games at home. It's best to address that early on. And they are going to get plenty of opportunities to do so, with 6 of their next 7 games on their home ice.

Ottawa is bringing some scoring punched the season. The Senators are averaging 3.64 goals per game, good enough for fifth overall in the NHL. They have also been decent at the defensive end, only giving up 2.64 goals per game. However, as we said they are leading the league in a very dubious category: overtime losses. They have 5 on the season so far, and nobody else In the NHL even has 3 yet.

Meanwhile, despite scoring 5 goals in their last game, the Habs are still by far the worst offensive team in the NHL. Montreal bumped their scoring up to 2 goals per game with that last win. But they are still dead last in scoring, just ahead of the Edmonton Oilers. Defensively, they still suck, allowing the third most goals in the NHL, at 3.82 goals per game.

Montreal is going out on the road for a little road trip against Ottawa, Minnesota, Winnipeg, and Chicago. It would be a massive victory for them to win 2 of those games. After that, they have a nice 6-game homestand to try to build some momentum and slowly start to grind their way up the standings.

Even though this team has shown signs of turning things around, and they have won two out of their last three games, it's hard to feel good about this Montréal Canadiens team. Again, they almost blew the game against the struggling New York Rangers. If they would've coughed up that 3 goal lead, against a struggling team, right before they embark on a four-game a road trip, that would've been absolutely crippling. But, they won that game, so now they are in anything-is-possible territory. I still believe this team has the tools to beat any team in the NHL on any given night. And they are going to have to if they want to turn the season around. But I don't have them winning tonight.
