Montreal Canadiens: Stumbling some down the stretch
Posting a rather pedestrian recent record, Montreal is stumbling some as we near the playoff chase finish line. Following a 9-1-2 run to close out February, the Canadiens are just 3-4-2 in nine games played in March. Back on March 1st, Montreal was second in the Presidents' Trophy race and two points behind Nashville. Heading into action tonight, the Habs are still two points back but they have dropped to fourth overall as the leaders are now the Ducks, Rangers and Blues.
Carolina Hurricanes: Still blowing and barely a tropical storm as playoff elimination looms
Doomed right out of the NHL season starting gate, after they posted a 0-6-2 mark in October, Carolina has been crashing ever since. The Hurricanes have a playoff pulse but it's a weak one as their "magic number" is now two as a Carolina loss, coupled with a Boston win, will result in the 'Canes being eliminated from the postseason. Carolina closed February with three wins a row but their March has been miserable as they've posted a 2-4-2 record during the month of Madness.
Hurricanes vs Canadiens Call: This is a mismatch as Montreal is the superior squad here. Of the teams chasing the NHL Presidents' Trophy - not many want it more than the banner hanging crazy Canadiens. This is the last of the three game season series. Montreal won the first two, that were both played in December, 4-1 at home and 3-1 in Raleigh. Carolina has lost seven of their last eight games played in Montreal - including four straight where they were shut out twice and outscored by a 14-2 margin. Still, the 'Canes may have some fight as "spoilers" so we will take the modest route with a 500 unit wager on the Montreal money line price posted at SportsInteraction.
