New York Mets: Have widened their gap in the NL East
When we last checked in on New York, back on August 12, the Mets were 62-52 and they owned a 2.5 game lead in the NL East over Washington. Thanks impart to a Nationals meltdown, New York now has a five game bulge on the DC Crew. Crushing teams they should crush, the Mets are on an 8-4 roll with seven of the wins coming at the expense of the Colorado Rockies. In between roughing up the Rockies, New York was swept in a three-game home series versus the Pittsburgh Pirates and split a two-game set with the Orioles in Baltimore. The Mets are solid across the board.
Philadelphia Phillies: Still fighting to stay out of the MLB basement
Give credit were credit is due as the Phillies could have folded their tent when they were 29-62 and sat 21 games out of first place in the NL East at the All-Star break. Instead, Philadelphia has posted a sparkling 21-12 mark over their last 33 contests. The Phillies return home after taking three of four games versus the Marlins in Miami over the weekend. Philadelphia lost the first contest 9-7 and then mauled the Marlins by a 13-3 margin in their three wins. This series will have a playoff feel to it for the Phillies as they would love to play the spoilers role during the dogs days of summer.
Phillies vs Mets MLB Predication: NY RHP Jacob deGrom (12-6 ERA 1.98) faces rookie LHP Adam Morgan in the mound matchup here. A NL Cy Young Award candidate, deGrom has allowed just seven runs over his last 48.2 innings pitched and the Mets have won all seven of those starts. Morgan meets the Mets for the first time in his young career and he is 2-2 in August as he has allowed eleven runs over 24 innings pitched this month. This is the first of seven meetings over the next ten days between these clubs and the Mets own a rock solid 8-1 record in the season series to date.
