Oakland Athletics: Post All-Star break dumpster fire
In fairness, Oakland's season didn't turn into a dumpster fire until August 10, 2014, but the A's were torched more often than not from that point forward. On August 9th, the Athletics owned the best record in baseball as they were cruising along at 66-40 good for a .623 winning percentage. Fast forward 56 games and Oakland's record plummeted to 88-74 good for a .543 winning percentage which is the worst of the eight playoff teams. Being on a 22-34 run (.392 WP) heading into a single game elimination battle can't be a good feeling.

Sitting 6.5 games behind the Tigers at the All-Star break, KC almost caught Detroit in the AL Central pennant race.
MLB AL Wild Card Call: Jon Lester vs James Shields is classic Ace vs Ace match-up. Lester is the more proven playoff pitcher as he owns a 2.11 ERA over 13 postseason appearances with Boston. Shields on the other hand posted a 4.98 playoff ERA in six playoff starts when he was with Tampa Bay. Though they've been flat recently, Oakland averaged 4.5 runs per game while Kansas City averaged four runs per game over 162 contests this season.
