Chicago Cubs: Seeking more than a Wild Card playoff spot
As the hottest team in the National League, Chicago is riding an amazing 20-4 winning streak and the Cubs are 6.5 games ahead of San Francisco for the second NL Wild Card position. While the Cubs 72-51 record would be tops in four of the six divisions, Chicago trails St. Louis by 6.5 games and Pittsburgh by 3.5 games in the NL Central race. In their sweep of San Francisco in Chicago earlier this month, the Cubs outscored the Giants by a 22-13 margin during what was a nine game winning streak. Pittsburg is getting pounded so the Cubs can gain a game with a win here.
San Francisco Giants: Chasing the Dodgers for first place in the NL West Division
Facing that almost insurmountable 6.5 game deficit to the Cubs in the NL Wild Card race, San Francisco has their sights set on Los Angeles as they attempt to defend their 2014 World Series Championship. Sitting with a 66-58 record, the Giants are just two games behind the Dodgers in the NL West Division race. San Francisco has been very inconsistent during August as they have posted 10-12 record this month. The Giants return home after a rough ride through the NL Central division as they went 1-2 versus St. Louis and 1-3 against Pittsburgh during a seven game road trip.
Giants vs Cubs MLB Call: CHI RHP Jake Arrieta (15-6 ERA 2.30) is faces SFG RHP Matt Cain in the mound matchup tonight. Arrieta has been lights out lately as he’s allowed just three runs over 27.1 innings pitched during four starts this month. Cain hasn’t been very able since returning from a forearm injury in July and he has allowed 16 runs over four starts in August. As an added bonus, Arrieta owns a 2.01 ERA on the road which is better than his still solid 2.56 ERA at home.
