CFL vs. NFL: Same Game – Different Rules & Results
Canadian Rules Differ Slightly From American Football
While NFL and CFL are very similar, there are some very distinct differences. First and foremost a CFL field is bigger, at 110 yards long and 65 yards wide, than an NFL playing surface at just 100 yards in length and 53.3 yards in width. Wider spaces make for much wilder games in the Great White north.
Other noticeable differences between the two games include 12 players are on the field for each play in the CFL compared to just 11 in the NFL. In the Canadian game, multiple players can go in motion on offense, and forward motion is allowed prior to the snap – both would be flagged as penalties in the NFL.
As well, receivers only have to come to down with one foot in bounds (both in the NFL) and defensive linemen have to set up one yard away for the line of scrimmage. Both rules make for higher scoring in Canada.
Online Betting Options & Fantasy Football Further Boost The NFL
Apart from the various physical and rule differences, the NFL is always going to trump the CFL in terms of popularity. This is due in part to the sheer size of the league – 32 NFL teams compared to 8 CFL teams, the star power the NFL players possess, and the media attention paid to the weekly NFL schedule.
A much wider array of future, proposition, and game day online sportsbook betting options, along with the exploding growth of NFL Fantasy Football, are also key reasons why the National Football League is the King of football watching and wagering in North America.
