Columbus Crew Record

The Columbus Crew are one of MLS’ charter clubs and one of the most successful Eastern Conference teams. The Crew have finished three times as the top team in the league and have been to two MLS Cups – winning one in 2008 and losing in 2015. Between 2008 and 2015 the Crew have made 6 trips to the postseason after only qualifying once between 2003 and 2007. Columbus made the playoffs 6 of their 7 first seasons but was unable to get to the MLS Cup Finals – losing to D.C United three times in the Conference Finals.

Located just north of downtown Columbus and east of Ohio State University is Mapfre Stadium. Built in 1999, Mapfre Stadium was built specifically for the Crew and has a capacity of just over 20,000. For the clubs first three season this played at Ohio Stadium, but the field was not designed to house a professional soccer team and the team pushed for their own stadium.

The biggest rivalries of the Crew are the Chicago Fire and the Toronto FC. Toronto and Columbus play for the Trillium Cup which is awarded to the winner of the season series – which is either 2 or 3 games depending on how the schedule is designed. The Crew have won the trophy 6 of the 8 times it has been awarded including sweeping the series (no losses or draws) in 2012. They also hold a friendly rivalry with FC Dallas – as the teams were both owned by Lamar Hunt until he passed away in late 2006.

The fact the Crew have been a strong team for the majority of their existence means the lines for them are often tight – especially when they are at home. The Crew – as of 2015 – have more victories than losses but are now facing stiffer competition with the rise of the expansions clubs – including their bitter rivals in Toronto.
