How To Bet On MLS Playoffs

Major League Soccer playoffs feature 12 teams – six from each conference – playing a total of 17 games including the finals. The MLS playoffs begin around the end of October, with the knockout stage. The knockout stage pits the third and sixth seed and fourth and fifth seed from each conference against each other. The winner of each game goes onto face either of the top two teams from their respective conference.

The following two rounds feature two matches – with each team getting a home game. The winner is decided by the aggregate total of the two matches – which means the higher scoring team advances on to the next round. This means the teams can split the two games. In the event of a draw the game is decided by which team scored more goals as the away team. If away goals are tied, then a penalty shootout after the second game is used to decide the winner. Though the process may be complicated, it allows for the two matches to play out differently but both are entertaining in their own right.

The top clubs in the MLS playoffs history are the LA Galaxy and D.C United. Compared to their 79 total wins the MLS has 5 franchises that as of spring 2016 have yet to win a playoff match. As the league aims to reach 24 clubs by 2020, teams will see the parity in the league increase and all those clubs currently dogged by a postseason win drought should be able to build strong enough clubs to end their streaks.

Bettors can find great money lines, over/under and prop betting during the postseason. As the clubs match up better in the postseason, the games are typically tighter – especially after the knockout stage. Bettors can enjoy some great player prop betting during the playoffs. The most common player props are first goal scorer, last goal scorer and whether or not a player will score at all during the game. Once and awhile bookmakers will toss in some fun prop bets – often based specifically on a certain player’s actions or a certain event transpiring. These can whether a certain player will get more red/yellow cards than another during the playoffs. Another example is whether or not any players will be head-butted.  These prop bets are arguably the most fun but are a little riskier, so bettors beware.
