The Florida Panthers lines have showed that the team has been considered an underdog pretty much throughout the history of the squad. This team was awarded a franchise in 1992 and started their first season in 1993. After a fast start to their history, Florida quickly declined into a lengthy streak of missing the playoffs, low attendance and generally being made fun of as an inept franchise. Recent changes to how the team operates shows that this will no longer be the case.

Florida Panthers Record

The first time the Panthers made the playoff was during their third year, in the 1995-96 season.  This started one of the most unlikely runs to the Stanley Cup Finals that the NHL has witnessed, as the Panthers managed to take out the heavily favoured Flyers, Penguins and Bruins before their Cinderella run ended with a sweep at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche. Since then, they’ve been unable to replicate this type of playoff success.

In fact, historically, the Panthers have been considered one of the most disappointing franchises in the league, making the playoffs only three times despite the fact that they’re part of one of the least competitive divisions. Recently, with the addition of a new front office and legendary stars steering the ship, Florida has managed to return to respectability, finishing with a division title.

As a whole, the franchise has been plagued by instability at the managerial level. Despite a slew of top draft picks and a sunny location for free agents to enjoy, numerous opportunities to parley assets into winning have failed. Now that the trend has been reversed, the Panthers have solidified their play through strong defence, great goaltending, timely scoring and veteran leadership. Their only glaring weakness is the lack of top-level scoring depth.

Florida usually doesn’t come close to competing for the Stanley Cup, as evidenced by their lack of participation in the playoffs. Nonetheless, with the team now in the hands of experienced management that drafted well and signed solid free agents, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the Panthers are one or two players away from another deep run into the playoffs. Fans of wagering on the NHL may even consider Florida a dark horse to take it all, which is a great play for bettors looking for solid wagering value.
