    2017 MLS Cup Predictions

    2017 MLS Cup Predictions

It was 1 year ago that an upstart Toronto FC team came from third place in the East to play to win it all. But after a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss, Toronto came into this season looking for blood. And they got it. The MLS ran Blood Red this year, as Toronto had an epic season and showed that revenge is a dish best served cold and measured in Celsius, not Fahrenheit.

Toronto went on to earn a record of 20-5-9, while The Red racked up 69 points to set a single-season Major League Soccer record. Also, their 6 win improvement over last season put the Toronto FC into first overall. Toronto has scored more, won more, have more to prove and have bigger chips on their shoulders. But does that mean they’re favored to win? We think so and the oddsmakers across the web seem to agree.

The Toronto FC (1.64) Sports Interaction

The Toronto FC opened their playoff run as 6-1 odds-on favorites to win it all. Their opponents, the Seattle Sounders FC were not far behind in third place, with 7-1 odds. Nothing has changed there, as Toronto is still favored to win this weekend.

What does Seattle have to do to pull off the upset? Simple, they need to control the pace of the game and hopefully not put too much pressure on netminder Stefan Frei. Frie led Seattle to a 14-9-11 record for 53 points, which funny enough the same number of points the Reds managed last year. It seems like forever ago he donned the Toronto colors in net. He’s enjoyed his best season in Seattle so far and earned eight clean-sheets in 33 appearances, good enough for fourth.

At the other end of the field, Toronto will be protected by 23-year-old Alex Bono, who has blossomed into a full-time starter, and posted a record of 19-4-6 this year. He’s also earned two straight shutouts in his last two starts and looks to be the man the Reds need in net, in the biggest game of his life.

Toronto mayor John Tory and Seattle mayor Jenny Durkan have made their bets. It’s a high stakes game as (gasp) the losing mayor has to wear the other team’s scarf and send a basket of the city’s stereotypical goodies (Maple syrup or Starbucks coffee) to the winner. Yikes. They really went for it there. Oh well, you can do much better when placing your bets this weekend.
