NFL Betting: Are Teasers Profitable Bets?

NFL Betting: Are Teasers Profitable Bets?

Betting teasers on the NFL will likely remain popular until the end of time and if you know what you are doing and what to look for, teasers can be a very profitable way to attack the weekly NFL betting board. Teasing favorites down to a pick'em range and totals six-plus points lower to take the over generally seem to be the favorite option of bettors new to teasers, but there is so much more to it. If you can correctly predict how a particular game will play out in terms of style, teasers will quickly become one of your favorite NFL betting methods.

    Profitable NFL Teaser Examples

The main thing teaser bettors first look for when considering teasing a particular game is how many "key" numbers they can tease it through. For NFL point spreads, key numbers are 3,7,10,14, and 17 depending on which way you are looking to tease. It is much more common for NFL scores to end on those numbers so getting below them (on a favorite) and above them (on an underdog) is critical to how successful you can be betting teasers. Obviously deciding on whether or not you are going to use a 6-point, or 7-point teaser fits into this discussion as well.

The same thing applies to totals although there are many more key numbers to be aware of. To start, 37, 41, 43, 47, 51, and 55 are numbers to be aware of in that regard. Secondly, teasing the same game on the side AND the total for two-team teasers is something that professional bettors look to do each week. Teasing numbers both ways on a particular game allow tremendous ranges for "middles" ie: the result landing in the middle of all desired outcomes, and can be extremely lucrative if your projections are on.

It might be easier to work through an example to further explain these concepts, so let's take a look at the Week 16 game between Baltimore and Pittsburgh in 2016.

    Week 16 lines

This is one of the better games to use as an example because the point spread on the game is at -5.5 and that's generally considered to be a prime teaser number. Let's say you like Pittsburgh to win the game but don't want to lay the "dead number" of -5.5 because believe there is a good chance it could come down to a FG. A 6-point teaser would allow you to tease Pittsburgh down through the key number of -3 and all the way to +0.5; essentially a pick'em.

Given the physical battles Baltimore and Pittsburgh tend to have with one another, points may be at a premium as well, meaning teasing the total up 6 points to 50 and taking the 'under' isn't a bad option. Yet, while you've gotten Pittsbrugh through the key number of -3 and taken them to win the game outright, 'under' 50 fails to save you if it does turn out to be a high-scoring game as that key number of 51 is still dangerous. Ideally, a 7-point teaser on Pitt +1.5 and Under 51 is what you'd be looking for here.

Conversely, you could add another teaser on Baltimore +12.5 and Over 37, which gets the underdog past those key numbers of +7 and +10, but not quite to +14. It also gets your total to the key number of 37, and now if Pittsburgh wins the game by less than 13 points and the final score is 38 to 50 points, you win both of your bets. There are obviously multiple other ways you can earn a split on those two teasers, but it's easy to see how profitable teasers can be if you accurately project how a game will play out.

    NFL Teasers Betting Summary

While there is a general misconception in some betting circles that teasers are known as "sucker bets," don't buy into that belief. There is plenty of money to be made with teasers and using all the advanced analytics and stats that are readily available can make projecting a particular game script (aka how a game will play out stylistically) easier and more accurate.

Bottom line, it may take some time getting used to betting teasers, but when you know what to look for, they can be extremely profitable.
