Nashville vs Pittsburgh Game 4 Preview

    My Team's Next Match

The Nashville Predators roared back into the Stanley Cup Finals with a dominant 5-1 victory over the defending champions, the Penguins. Pekka Rinne rewarded his coach's faith in him and stopped 25 of 26 shots for his best game of the series as his teammates did the rest.

In a role reversal from game 2, the Penguins scored first but three unanswered goals from the Predators spelled the end for them. Jake Guentzel continued to score for the Penguins but this game could mark a shift in momentum for the Predators.

      PUCKLINE MONEYLINE TOTAL
    Predators  -1.5 (+190)  -160  o5.5 (+105)
    Penguins  +1.5 (-235)  +135  u5.5 (-125)

Through three games, the Predators (-160) have outshot the Penguins (+135) in every single game but have only come away with one win. Rinne had been the goat of those losses posting an abysmal save percentage that was unusual for the elite netminder but since turning it around in the third game, the Predators completely dominated the Penguins.

Nashville defense continues to keep Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in check and remain nearly unbeatable at home with a 7-1 record. It's now the Penguins who have some soul-searching to do.

The Penguins were taken to the limit by Nashville's defense and so far the likes of Crosby and Phil Kessel are goal-less. Guentzel is still scoring at a ridiculous rate now with 13 goals to lead all scorers but so long as Crosby and the Penguins' powerplay (0 for 3 in game 3) remain frozen, the Penguins will have a tough time winning. Murray, the Penguins' best player through their two wins finally got solved by the Predators. The Penguins' role players will need to step up to provide additional offense. They didn't let their fans down.

The Predators delivered an iconic performance in Nashville's first ever taste of the Finals. The Bridgestone Arena was helped boost the Predators as they thoroughly outplayed Pittsburgh despite surrendering the first goal. Rinne exorcised his demons and was back to his vintage form as five different Predators scored. Roman Josi stepped up big posting three points (1G 2A). The Predators dominated the transition game and had several breakaway opportunities and used those rebounds to beat Murray and are ready to tie up the series.

Assuming Rinne doesn't break down again, the Predators should have game 4. The defense led by Josi and P.K. Subban continue to excel and despite the absence of Ryan Johansen the Predators find ways to score. The threat of Crosby and Malkin remain but the defense is finding ways to contain them and Nashville is tough to beat at the raucous Bridgestone Arena. More importantly, they are crashing the net more and getting rebounds, which lead to second chance opportunities on top of dominating the transition game. They should win comfortably again.

Betting the money line is the simplest bet to make but it isn't the easiest. Having to wage more money to get less in return for a favourite isn't appealing and neither is taking a shot at a likely loser even for extra winnings. The best sportsbooks offer valid alternatives such as the "puckline" a.k.a. the point spread of the NHL and the over/under or "totals". Each requires its own strategy.

The puckline has the same philosophy as the point spread: both favourite and underdog are given a points handicap to cover. A -1.5 spread indicates the team has to win by over 1.5 goals to cash the bet as 1.5 will be deducted from their final score. On the flipside, +1.5 indicates the team has up to 1.5 goals to lose by as it will be added to their final score. Unlike point spreads in football or basketball, the puckline in hockey isn't lined at even odds due to the low scoring.

The totals is where you bet whether the combined score between both teams goes over (+105) or under (-125) the oddsmaker's line: 5.5. The winning team is irrelevant. In the last game, the Predators (5) and Penguins (1) totaled to 6 cashing the o5.5 line.

It is usually a more conservative tactic to bet the under but the series has been high-scoring with the over line cashing twice out of three games.

Reading up on betting sites and gambling tactics helps but only by playing and gaining experience can you really get better. Thankfully, sites offer signup bonuses up to $200 in cash giving some wiggle room for new players.
