Sports Interaction 105th Grey Cup Betting Lines Picks

The Grey Cup is truly a tale of two cities and two very different seasons to get to the big game. Calgary rode roughshod over the competition and then very much phoned it in over the last 3 games of the regular season. They had the luxury of coasting because they dominated the regular season so much. Meanwhile, Toronto had no such luxury.

The Argos had to scrap and fight just to get to .500 on the season. I’m actually very impressed Toronto has made it this far. They spent most of the regular season approaching .500, then falling back, approaching .500, falling back. Repeat again. They finally made a late-season push and won back-to-back games against tough Western Conference foes, beating a very strong Winnipeg team by a point, and then winning on the road against the BC Lions. And of course, they won a thrilling game against the Roughriders to open the playoffs. This was a game that was marred by a stupid freaking fan who wouldn’t stop blowing their horn and basically ruined the audio for the entire game. If you watched it, you know what I'm talking about. Sorry, just had to rant.

I can’t, in good conscience, bet on Calgary this weekend. I don’t think they’re a championship team. I also don’t think Toronto is a championship team, but I think they’re scrappy enough to upset a heavily favoured (and complacent) team. I’m backing the Argos. Strange as it sounds.

    The Toronto Argonauts (7.5) Play

Meanwhile, Calgary dropped their last 3 games of the regular season, against the Blue Bombers, Roughriders and Stampeders… and were like “Meh, we’ve got a first-round bye anyways.” And in the playoffs, they met a very game Edmonton team who gave them everything they could handle. Because of their streak and the schedule, Calgary hadn’t played in 2 weeks and hadn’t won a game in over a month. But they pulled through and avoided the upset.

They are favoured to win it, but I just can’t go all in on them. It’s probably because they won a lot of games in the regular season, but that losing streak at the end of the season really sticks in my craw. It was very un-champion-like of them. Toronto has more to prove, and will likely come out hungrier in this game. I’m having a hard time imagining The Stamps coming out of the games with the same intensity as the Argos. This is sort of what you would expect when a 13-4-1 team plays a 7-7 team… who had to work very hard just for that 7-7 record.

These two teams met twice in the regular season, with Calgary taking both games, on the road and at home, 41-24 and 23-7. So you could certainly make the argument that, not only has Toronto yet to prove they can beat Calgary, they haven’t even proved they can play with Calgary. Especially on the road. Toronto has also lost 3 of their last 4 road games. That being said, before they won in the playoffs, Calgary had lost their last two home games.

Like I said earlier, I feel like Toronto is going to come out hot early. They may even score the first touchdown. How will Calgary respond after getting punched in the mouth? After the last game against the Roughriders, Toronto must honestly feel like they’re never really out of a game and can come back in any situation. Can Calgary say the same? Maybe not.
