Super Bowl 52 Odds: The Case for and Against the Eagles

Super Bowl 52 Odds: The Case for and Against the Eagles

    My Team's Next Match

Carson Wentz’s season-ending injury was supposed to end the Eagle’s title chances. But they’re now playing for their first ever Super Bowl win, and the city of Philadelphia's first championship since The 2008 Philadelphia Phillies and only their second in 35 years. Here are the arguments for and against them winning the Super Bowl.

    The Argument for Them Winning

Well, we will start with their strength: Their defence.

The Eagles held teams to 18.4 points a game in the regular season. They’ve been even better in the postseason and have only given up 17 total points in the playoffs this year.

That being said, they were really “meh” defending against the pass, going up against the most celebrated quarterback in the history of the NFL. But the good news is they did force the 4th most interceptions in the NFL with 19 in the regular season. A timely interception or pick-six can really take some of the pressure off an offense without much big-game experience.

Here’s another reason they can win: They have absolutely nothing to lose. Again, this is a team that’s used to going against the odds. They were the first 1 seed to play a 6 seed and be the underdog. But they won that game, and won the next game in a total ass-kicking.

Also, they’ve got a journeyman QB who has faced bigger adversity in his life than playing in a big game. The 29-year-old has been through a lot. He’s been fighting for his spot on the team since his first year of eligibility at Arizona. He’s playing for the 4th team of his career. He’s been released and had his contract option declined. Concepts that seem completely alien to the pretty boy QB on the other team. Nick Foles isn’t afraid of adversity or the big moment and can be the man Philly needs.

    The Argument for Them Losing

Here is a number that really shows you what The Eagles are up against. Tom Brady has played in 15% of all Super Bowls… ever! Also, Foles is only playing in his third playoff game, ever! Brady only has 3 fewer playoff starts than Foles has career starts.

He was just-good-enough in the first game against the Falcons, and wonderful in the second game against the Vikings, going 26/33 for 352 yards, 3 passing TDs, and no interceptions. But, this is figuratively and literally a whole different ball game. He’s now facing the defending champions.

Also, not for nothing, he’s not going to have anything but hostility from the Minnesota crowd. Let’s not forget that Foles brought their beloved Vikings season to a really untimely and unceremonious end… and they don’t take too kindly to people who cost them the chance to be the first ever city to host their home team in the Super Bowl. So Brady just went from the pariah to the crowd-favorite.

They will also be facing the best offensive team in the NFL. They didn’t quite lead the league in scoring. But New England scored 28.6 points a game, good enough for second in the NFL behind the Rams. However, they put up that many points, despite being the defending champions, and every team’s game-of-the-year.
