Winter Games: Ice Hockey Schedule, Odds and Predictions for 2018

Winter Games: Ice Hockey Schedule, Odds and Predictions for 2018
Alright! Time for some Olympic hockey! The only reason we really care about the Winter Games! Time for our team of NHL Canuck all-stars to beat up on some Yankees, Ruskies, and Finns. It’s gonna be… wait. What do you mean the pros aren’t playing this year?? Well, who does Team Canada have?? Who the hell is he?? Oh well, pros or no-go on the pros, we’ve got the odds and predictions for Olympic hockey.

Canada is looking for it’s 4th Men’s Hockey Gold Medal in 5 Olympias as it’s us against the world. But you can throw out all the recent trends and wins, because the slate is wiped clean and so are the rosters. No current NHL talent means all teams are going to shuffle the deck and pull together their best hockey journeymen.

You may not know all their names. Hell, you may not have even known where Pyeongchang was until these Olympics. But it’s go-time! So let’s place our bets.

Olympic Winter Games Men’s Hockey Predictions

Canada ranked 2nd overall, you say? If these were NHL players, we would take that more personally.

So let’s take a look at who we DO have. Team Canada is trying to bring a blend of grizzled vets, and young up-and-comers. It’s not really outrageous that Russia is favoured over Canada since a lot of our talent currently plays in the KHL in Russia.

We’ve got 35-year-old Rene Bourque, and his 700 NHL games under his belt. You may remember him playing for Chicago, Calgary, Montreal, Anaheim, Columbus or Colorado. He was a key piece to Montreal’s run to the conference finals in 2014. We’ll also get I’ve seen it all” leadership from 37-year-old “ Chris Lee, with extensive international experience.

But our most experienced player is Chris Kelly, who is currently playing for Belleville in the AHL.

His resume is pretty impressive:

  • 833 NHL Games
  • 123 NHL goals, 166 assists for 289 points
  • The Stanley Cup Final with Ottawa in 2007
  • The Stanley Cup Final with Boston in 2013
  • Won The Stanley Cup with Boston in 2011

The first player in NHL history to score his team’s first goal of the season on a penalty shot (odd, but cool)

But it’s going to take a balanced attack and some new heroes to be born over these two weeks of hockey. By the end, expect one or two new (Canadian) household names.
