Redmayne vs Keaton: Theory of Everything Battles Birdman
If you haven't seen Birdman, we won't spoil it for you, but this film is a beauty. Classified as an American black comedy-drama, Keaton plays Riggan Thomson, a washed up Hollywood actor, who attempts to revive his stagnant career by bringing his hit movie role as super hero Birdman to the stage on Broadway in New York. Keaton is up against Eddie Redmayne who stars in the Theory of Everything which is a British biographical romantic drama film. Redmayne fills some pretty big boots by portraying Stephen Hawking, a real life super hero, during his days a astrophysics student.
Micheal Keaton would be an upset winner if he takes home the Best Actor Oscar
Though the odds are stacked against him, Michael Keaton has a shot at winning the coveted Best Actor Oscar for his work in Birdman. The plan to transfer Birdman from the silver screen to the stage is a grandiose one that includes Riggan writing, directing, and starring in the play. Added twists include the play being produced by Riggan’s best friend and lawyer Jake (Zach Galifianakis) plus Riggan’s girlfriend Laura (Andrea Riseborough) starring in the play. For good measure, Riggan’s daughter Sam (Emma Stone), a recovering drug addict, serves as his assistant during the production.
And the Best Actor Oscar Goes To: Understanding that Redmayne won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance – Lead Male Actor, and that SAG winner has won the last ten Best Actor Oscars, this is good time for the AMPAS to shake things up a bit. This is especially true when you consider that Birdman was produced with the appearance being filmed in one shot. This meant that takes were cut for the slightest mistakes and the cast, including Keaton, were subject to many weeks of meticulous rehearsals. Hollywood has a soft spot for Keaton so we will back Birdman to win the Best Actor Oscar with a 100 unit wager on the generous money line at UWIN.
