In a heated battle with San Francisco, due in large part to the Giants 3-11 record since the All-Star break, Los Angeles has climbed to within 1.5 games of first place in the National League West. The Dodgers also hold the top NL Wild Card spot as they have a two-game lead over St. Louis in that tight race. After the Diamondbacks scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning last night, the Dodgers erased a 7-3 deficit with a five-run outburst in the bottom half of the inning.
Despite a busy offseason, that was intended to build the Diamondbacks into a contender, it has been a very rough year in Arizona. The Dbacks have posted a 42-61 record and sit dead last in the NL West – a full 14 games behind the Giants. Pitching has been a huge problem all year as Arizona is sporting a 4.90 team ERA and they have given up 542 runs – both totals are second worst in the Majors. The offence hasn’t been much better as the Dbacks 459 runs scored is 16th overall.
