Detroit Tigers: Locked and loaded for MLB playoff run
Coming off a three game sweep of the lowly Rockies in Colorado, Detroit heads into the Bronx with a trio of Cy Young pitchers slated to start the first three contests of this four game set. Aiming for a sixth straight win, reigning American League Cy Young winner RHP Max Scherzer (13-3 ERA 3.27) gets the call in the opener. After a complete collapse in an 11-4 loss to Kansas City on June 17, Scherzer has given up just eleven runs and struck out 56 hiters over his last 47.2 innings pitched. Scherzer's 5.17 ERA in three regular season starts in NY is a concern here but his upside, and a stacked offense behind him, sways us to Tigers triumph here.
New York Yankees: Tough road ahead to catch Baltimore in AL East
Consistent postseason contenders, New York needs to get hot in order to avoid missing the MLB playoffs for a second straight year - which would be the first time that's happened since the 1992-93 seasons. The Bronx Bombers are five games out of first in the AL East and 1.5 back of the Blue Jays in the Wild Card race. The Yankees are coming off of back-to-back wins over Boston and they are 10-6 since the All-Star break - albeit against the likes of Texas (43-68) and Cincinnati (56-55). Acquired from Arizona at the trade deadline, RHP Brandon McCarthy (6-10 ERA 4.56) heads to hill and he's riding a three game winning streak in pinstripes.
