Pittsburgh Pirates: NL Wild Card leaders are looking for more
We’ve discussed it before, seemingly all season long actually, but Pittsburgh continues to chase the rainbow-like St. Louis Cardinals. The Pirates are on a solid 17-7 run in August but their winning ways haven’t moved Pittsburgh much closer to St. Louis in the NL Central. Despite the Buccos roll, the Cards 5.5 game lead at the beginning of August has only shrunk to 4.5 games as we near the end of the month. Pittsburgh has won four straight series, including a sweep of the NL East leading New York Mets, and the Pirates have posted an impressive 11-3 record during that stretch.
Colorado Rockies: Long 2015 MLB season continues in Denver for the Mile High Crew
While they aren’t the worst team in the Majors, that dubious distinction still belongs to the 50-78 Philadelphia Phillies, Colorado (51-74) is well on their way to a fifth straight season with a losing record. Although they weren't very good prior to the MLB All-Star game - the Rockies have really crumbled as they are 12-25 since returning from the break. Colorado rolls into the Steel City fresh off a series win in Atlanta as they won the last two contests of a three-game set by a 11-4 margin against the Braves. Six runs or more have been scored in ten of Colorado's last 13 games.
Pirates vs Rockies ML Game Total Prediction: LHP Francisco Liriano (9-6 ERA 3.23) battles RHP Jon Gray (0-0 ERA 5.94) in the rumble on the rubber tonight. Liriano has given up 14 runs (12 earned) over 21.1 innings pitched during four August starts and the Pirates won all four of those contests. Rockies rookie Gray was impressive during his first three career starts (four runs allowed over 15 innings) but he was rocked for seven runs over 1.2 innings during a 14-9 loss to the Mets in his last outing.
